{OPEN}: LONG BEACH’S ALTERNA-INSTITUTION PRESENTS NEW ART BY MATTY BYLOOS TONIGHT ON RETRO ROW

The owner/operators of {open} might not like to admit it, but the quirky bookstore/art chapel they founded in downtown’s East Village in 2003 has become a institutional pillar/load-bearing wall of Long Beach culture/cool since its 2007 move to Fourth Street/Retro Row.

And by “might not like to admit it” I mean that they “might prefer to brag about it.”  One of them, anyway; meeting sé reed just once makes you understand the importance of vigor to the survival of an otherwise-overmatched mission like {open}. Meeting the other one, shea M. gauer, reminds you of the importance of a tempering balance. That’s right, their names are sé (“say”) and shea (“shay”).

Meanwhile, tonight: {open} is presenting new work by Matty Byloos, an artist who paints and draws and writes and who tonight will be exhibiting creations of ink and spray paint to the musical accompaniment of DJ Oldboy.

Nope, I’ve never seen/heard the work of Byloos/Oldboy, either—which, for me, is part of the point of {open}: where else am I going to learn about them?

The reception is free and runs from 6-9 p.m. {open} is located at 2226 E. Fourth Street, between Cherry and Junipero, which is another way of saying between the Art theater and Portfolio coffee house.

Matty’s book of short stories, “Don’t Smell the Floss,” is very good, although not recommended for those with delicate constitutions. He’s a vibrant, entertaining writer, but there’s a WHOLE lot of fetish in there. I mean really.

Thanks for the mention! PS — You called me Marty in both the title and the tags, and it’s Matty.

And yes, Victor, a WHOLE lot of fetish in there. There will be a reading from the book with special guests and another band on April 17, which is a Saturday, so come on out!

Hi Matty. I fixed the spelling of your first name in the story and added a tag with the correct spelling—but left the Marty tag, you know, since I figure there may be one of those out there, somewhere, and he might need the pub. Sorry ’bout that!

Thanks Dave! Still “Marty” in the post title and title tag, btw. Thanks a million for the mention and if you come out to the reading April 17, please introduce yourself! Keep up the great work.

Jeez, I corrected that. Sorry. I’ll try again. Still getting familiar with WordPress.

I don’t mind reading twisted-prose, but, I like to know the theme of the “fetish” before-hand. As I’m very impressionable, I prefer not get images stuck in my mind like peanut butter.
