NO. 1 QUESTION AT 5TH DISTRICT DEBATE TONIGHT: WHO’S FUNDING MIKE HEDGES?

MIKE HEDGES

Tonight’s Long Beach Press Club debate between Fifth District city council candidates couldn’t come at a better time—as questions arise about who is funding Mike Hedges’ challenge to incumbent Gerrie Schipske.

LBReport.com broke the story of the mysterious money that’s powering Hedges’ campaign on Saturday (March 27), noting that the City Clerk’s Elections Bureau had sent the Hedges campaign a letter seeking disclosure and clarification of campaign finance reporting data for the period July 1-Dec. 31, 2009. Among the items for which the City Clerk’s office seeks an explanation: who paid for some printed campaign material allegedly disseminated during the July 1-Dec. 31, 2009 reporting period?

Coincidentally, I e-mailed Hedges on Friday morning to request an interview about his candidacy, not knowing of the funding controversy. Hedges responded that evening, explaining he was unavailable through Monday because he would be walking precincts and preparing for the debate. I followed up with a request for a telephone interview that received no reply.

In other words, no word from Hedges about any of this and no definitive answers from his campaign officials—neither to the City Clerk’s request nor to the questions from LBReport.com. That may change tonight, however.

At the Press Club’s debate Hedges and Schipske will face interrogation from a panel of local reporters in a 7 p.m. press-conference-style format at the El Dorado Restaurant, 3014. N. Studebaker Rd.  Arrive early for dinner and drinks, if you like.

That the sun will rise in the morning I am certain. I am also sure that NO reporters will interrogate these jokers with anything but the most banal questions.

Before I belly-flop into the abyss, I’d love to be asked to host a debate.
Perhaps on the Sonny Bozeman Show.
