DOWNEY CIVIC THEATRE’S ‘RED CARPET:’ $1 MILLION A YEAR IN TAXPAYER LOSSES

DOWNEY — The Downey City Council has put out a call for someone to manage and operate the Civic Theatre in hopes of getting more programs and bringing in more revenue.

After several months of study, Community Services Director Thad Phillips and a subcommittee composed of Councilmen Roger Brossmer and David Gafin have recommended leasing the facility to a private company which would conduct a series of concerts, performances and other activities which would attract residents of Downey and the surrounding area.

“The theater is a loser—$1 million a year,” Gafin said. “We want to make it more economically viable. We don’t want to board it up.” READ MORE
