OWNER OF FORMER COMPTON POT SHOP GETS 6 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON

A man who ran half a dozen medical marijuana dispensaries in the greater Los Angeles area, including one in Compton, has been sentenced to six years in federal prison.
In a March 22 sentencing, U.S. District Judge Stephen V. Wilson said that Virgil Edward Grant III used his licensed clinics to earn a profit selling pot for nonmedical purposes. The judge said Grant’s explanation that he was operating his multiple marijuana dispensaries as nonprofit cooperatives was “not credible.”
Authorities said Grant operated the six clinics like retail stores, earning him more than $1.3 million in the roughly two years they were in operation.

I think we’ll find that this is the case with many such places in Long Beach as well…for-profit drug dealing in the guise of legitimate medical marijuana cooperatives. Hopefully the new Long Beach ordinance will help to curb some of that and better serve legitimate patients while preventing the profit taking by drug dealers operating openly in and near our neighborhoods.
I agree 100% Mr Greet. These collectives are drug dens and need to be shut down immediately. How dare these drug dealers take over our beloved city and destroy our children’s lives. We will vote out any City Official that promotes illegal drug use which under Federal law marijuan is ILLEGAL!
@Tony LB: I think you’re over-reacting. There are reputable Medical Marijuana Collectives in this city that are serving legitimate medical patients for whom marijuana has been recommended as a valid treatment by licensed physicians.
I just hope we can keep these Collectives in operation, in full compliance with state and local law, and finally be rid of all the others that are simply selling drugs to whomever pops through the door. It’ll be tough to be rid of the unlawful places once and for all because the profit margin is huge and has been for a long time now, in Long Beach as well as many other local jurisdictions….as I think this story clearly illustrates.
